MORE: Wild goose chase originally meant a horse race that was popular in Shakespeare’s time. It’s modern meaning was probably coined by Dr Samuel Johnson, who defined it as a pursuit of something as unlikely to be caught as a wild goose. Current definition is a hopeless search.
